Travel with Children -- Tips for Saving
Money:
- Consult a travel agent and compare quotes
(we'd be happy to do help). We've been planning vacations for ourselves for
years but just recently learned what kinds of bargains travel agents often find,
especially on package deals. Not much on airfare, though...
- If you don't use a travel agent, look for online coupon codes to your travel vendors
(rental car companies, hotels, airlines, etc.). Entertainment guides and other
mass-prodction coupon books usually have good coupons as well.
- Air travel can be expensive for families, so be sure to regularly look for "best
fares" (we use Yahoo! Best Fares search). In addition to your local airport,
you might consider searching for flights from other airports 2-3 hours drive away.
In a recent trip we spent $100 in gas/hotel to save $600 in airfare for 4
people.
- Look for coupon booklets at hotels, attractions, and visitor's bureaus in the cities
that you visit (and online if you plan ahead like us!). Often you can find
big savings on the attractions you most want to see. These really add up for
a family of 4 or more.
- When you arrive at your destination, go to a local grocery or discount store and
buy snacks, drinks, etc. Pack them with you in your backpack or diaper bag
when possible instead of purchasing at the attractions. You'll save money
and often get a better snack.
- If traveling to a big city and staying primarily downtown, consider using public
transportation instead of renting a car. It's usually much cheaper, unless
you plan excursions outside the city.
- At meals, consider sharing entrees or ordering a selection of appetizers for a light
meal. Most restaurants serve you huge portions and you don't always have the
ability to take leftovers with you.
- Look for hotels that include breakfast. Many now offer beter choices beyond
a "continental" (juice-and-danish) breakfast and can save you $20-40/day for a family
of 4.
- Consider buying small souvenirs/toys for the kids BEFORE going to a new city.
That way, they get a new surprise but you don't spend $9.95 for a $2.50 item.
We do this a LOT, especially when traveling to DisneyWorld. :)
