Travel with Children -- Tips for Getting
to your Destination:
-
GENERAL:
- If possible, plan travel times close to nap times for younger children.
- Put together a "goodie bag" for your kids with small toys and snacks. Every
once in a while, give your child a new item or snack to keep them occupied.
- To acclimate your family to a new time zone, arrive at your destination in the evening
and stick to your usual end-of-day routine.
-
If you can afford it, a portable DVD player with headphones can make travel much
easier. We don't travel without ours anymore, especially on airplanes or long
car trips.
-
Even if your child can walk, make sure to bring a lightweight stroller if you plan
on walking much. Strollers can can be gate checked on airplanes or stashed away
in the trunk of your car.
-
CAR TRAVEL:
-
Plan frequent rest stops if driving. It might extend the length of the drive,
but you will all be happier. Stopping at a park/playground or rest stop on
the way is also a big help.
- Make sure yor CD selection includes a number of titles that your kids will enjoy
-- also bring these with you if you plan on renting a car.
- Bring along a pillow and a blanket to ensure your kids are comfy.
- Make sure the whole family is wearing comfy clothing. If traveling at night,
you might consider letting the kids travel in their pajamas. That way, if
you arrive at your destination while they're sleeping, you can just pop them into
bed.
- Choose crumble-free snack options when possible. Cheese sticks/wedges, fruit
slices, or similar items are less likely to be pulverized by tiny hands and ground
into your carpeting.
-
AIR TRAVEL:
- Fewer airlines these days are providing free munchies, and kids can’t always wait
for a snack regardless. Bring plenty of munchies in case your kids get hungry before
landing. Buy bottled drinks at the airport before boarding if you aren't sure
how quickly or often beverage service will be provided.
-
If your child misbehaves on an airplane, do your best to calm him/her (and yourself)
down but don't worry about the people around you. They've likely been in your
shoes before and if not you likely will never see them again.
-
Airport layovers extend travel time, but also can give your kids time to get up
and move around. Try to find a large empty space and for them to play. Some
airports even have play areas designated for this purpose.
