Travel with Children -- Dining Tips:
- Reinforce "the rules" -- remind your kids to use quiet voices, their best manners,
and be on their best behavior
- Stick to a schedule where possible -- Try to keep meal times on a similar schedule
as when you are home. This may be difficult if you're in a much different
time zone.
- Arrive Early -- your best bet when traveling is to eat early to avoid the crowds.
Eating at peak times may result in temper tantrums if waiting for a table or food
takes too long to arrive.
- Bring entertainment -- coloring books, small toys, stickers, whatever will keep
your little one occupied
- Order the Kids' meals first -- If possible, order kids' meals when placing your
drink order so that it will arrive faster and give your children plenty of time
to eat
- Keep snacks handy in the backpack/diaper bag in case dinner takes too long to arrive
- Discuss your trip during the meal -- hear more about what your kids enjoyed best,
discuss what's next on the agenda, or remind them of special experiences you've
alredy had
- Eating out is special when on vacation -- let your kids have special treats (slushes,
milkshakes, ice cream?) as long as they behave during the meal. Bribery can
do wonders...
- Alternate who's got "kid duty" so that each parent gets some time to enjoy their
meal
- Take the Kids out if needed -- If the kids misbehave, take them outside for some
time in the corner or a "time out"
- Carry extra sippy cups and bendable straws with you -- many restaurants may not
have kids' cups
- Go to nicer restaurants at lunchtime instead of dinner -- appropriate attire may
be more casual and children should be more welcomed
- If in doubt about the appropriateness of children in a particular establishment,
just ask!
